You didn't think you had to worry about all these being in your baby's formula, food, and soap (just to name a few)? Think again...
Just for a little personal take on the matter....
Science has now linked preservatives to auto immune disorders. I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism, which typically ails the older, overweight lady, so I don't quite fit the description, and I have a LOT of friends (also healthy sized and young) with the same diagnosis. Why on earth are we all suffering from this disease in our twenties? Of course, we can't say for certain, but maybe twenty some years of exposure to preservatives in all of the food we've been eating?
What I also never considered, were the negative effects of pesticides in your produce, or GMOs and preservatives in your food, or the phthalates in your baby's bottles. These things can disrupt hormones, have been linked to cancer, and other disorders. In fact, exposure to phthalates in utero can cause male genital malformations (i.e. hypospadias), and what do you know, Luke was born with a mild hypospadias. Yes I know, I can't beat myself up for using tupperware, but still!
Every time I've ever made an excuse for not using organic or non-toxic products, my sister Ryan always responded with "Claudia, you are worth it". This hit home with me most when Luke was born, because suddenly he became the most important thing in the world to me, and he was definitely worth it. So I absolutely would never judge anyone for choosing the products they choose, but what I've learned is that most people, just like me, don't know about the scary ingredients in all of this stuff! Once you learn, it makes it really hard to continue using them though...but what is great, is that there are much safer products out there that are equal in cost or only SLIGHTLY higher (aren't you and your baby worth a few extra bucks?) and just as accessible if you know where to look. So these are merely suggestions, in the end you have to do what makes the most sense for you, but another thing I've discovered is that I usually end up liking these safer products more than the traditional, commercialized ones, not because they are safe, but because they are better in quality.
While there are a million and one baby products out there to consider, there are a few that I changed immediately after learning about how dangerous the well known brand name ones were, and it wasn't that hard, I promise! I will be sharing what I've learned about these products through my blog posts, so stay tuned...
